What you are seeing is your system starting up in Verbose Mode Start up your Mac in single-user mode or verbose mode
So either your keyboard is jammed up (not likely) or the OS on your hard drive is in trouble. So replacing the drive might be needed here iMac Intel 24" EMC 2134 and 2211 Hard Drive Replacement
But before you do down that path lets see if you can fix your drive. The easiest way is to leverage Target Disk Mode since you have two Macs by setting yours up by restarting it and pressing on the T key. All you need is a FireWire cable to connect the two systems together back to back!

At this point your iMac’s drive is being see by the other iMac as an external drive. Now we do need to be careful here as your system needs a newer OS release than your friends. The highest you can go to is El Capitan OS X 10.11.6 make sure you have a copy of the installer!
Before you do anything make a backup of your data copying off to an external drive your stuff. Then launch Disk Utility and check your drive and make any repairs it requires. See if that allows your system to startup on its own. If not setup your system again in TDM and this time reformat your drive.
If you’re lucky you still have the OS installer on your drive or your friends system might have it. We still have one more problem before we can install the OS! Apple has a certificate system within the installer which checks your systems date to see if the window the installer is what your date is. Well… The window is no longer valid! So we need to cheat! Both of your systems date needs to be rolled back to a date that’s within the window - Dec 2016 following this:
Run the OS installer from your friends iMac and make sure you’ve selected your systems drive. Let us know how it goes!
As far as using your friends DH I don’t recommend it its just better to get a new drive. But you will need to make sure you get the correct one! I would recommend getting a Seagate FireCuda as it can run at SATA II (3.0 Gb/s) which many drives today don’t.
