Why is my battery draining fast with HDMI adapter?

My new 16 inch MBP battery drains very fast with an HDMI adapter. Of course now, you have to use an HDMI adapter with all USB-C/Thunderbolt ports. I am a college instructor and would plug my MPB into the AV system using the native HDMI port on my 2014 MBP, projecting to a very large classroom monitor. I could get about 2.5 hours use with my old MBP. With the new MBP, using the adapter, I’m getting 1.5 hours at best. Occasionally less. Running the same apps, processes as I did with my older MBP. The new MBP supposedly has a bigger capacity battery so it should give me at least the same battery time as my older MBP that is 5.5 years older! I am using an Anker USB-C/HDMI adapter. I don’t think that should make a difference. I like Anker cables MUCHO better than Apples crap and overpriced cables. Thanks for any advice.

Apple is not run by Steve Jobs anymore. You are using an HDMI adapter to drive a large an external monitor. Apple is now run by a different breed of people who are corporate oriented rather than consumer oriented. So expect to pay more for less and only get six years of use out of it. If you don’t like this then support the Right to Repair people and legislation.

I’ll be very happy to tell you just how little you have to spend to get that old machine up to speed if you’ll tell me what it is. ( It’s probably a better machine and better built . more upgradeable and repairable).

I've still got my old MBP 2014. Got twice the battery time connecting to the same external monitor through the native HDMI port as this new 16-inch model using USB-C adapter. Nothing wrong with my old machine. In day-to-day use it is plenty fast (16 GB Ram/1 TB SSD/4 GB Video Card). I know how to mod. I was just wanting to upgrade to the faster processors, graphics, etc .... and sell my old machine while I can still get value out of it. Haven't sold it yet. :-)

I have noticed on my new system that when I use an extra display it switches from integrated graphics into the more energy hogging extreme graphics. I don't see any way around this other than using the correct wattage adapter and plugging in during use.

Now I will say other than size I do like the Apple adapters there was some big chunkers at one point and until they made the cords detachable I replaced mine every time they frayed with real copper cabling.

So I would say the solution would be to plug-in when you can because you're going to put cycles on that non-replaceable battery and definitely for presentations unfortunately. The good news is there's most likely an outlet at the presentation station. Another possible option would be to get the higher power wattage adapter to help with that you're using the more powerful discrete graphics processor.

Thanks for your reply Mark. My original post was over a year ago. I have other issues with this MBP but the HDMI and battery issue is not a problem anymore. I do have the higher powered adaptor. I have a battery utility I use that shows my charging cycles. So I'm good. Thx!!

@ckayjr that's good. I tend to be a late replyer. I figure if it's not helpful for the original poster it might be helpful for somebody else. Yeah I've had weird issues with my MacBook Pro and then they just sort of go away and then come back. Had a battery drain issue as well seem to be a runaway process that would never close out less I did a clean reboot without re-opening everything. The new ones don't seem as stable as the old ones.

Oh speaking of utilities, I never mention that I have istat menus. specifically the CPU tab let's me see which graphics mode I am in. but I know there's other ways of doing it.
