What is the model number of the TV?
Have you tried different input, input types and signal sources e.g. dvd player, to see if the problem is always there.
Seems as though the backlight is turning off.
Try shining a torch at an angle close to the screen when the TV is on and there is audio to see if you can detect images at all. They will be very faint if they are there so trying this in a darkened room may help.
