How do I fix a black screen following a HD replacement?

I have a 1.67 gHz Powerbook G4 that has a black screen issue, among others, following a HD replacement. I also upgraded the RAM from 1.5 G to 2 G. I followed the ifixit instructions to the letter. I hear the chime when powering the computer but all I get is a black screen and the computer will not accept the install disk. I read one fix as making sure the screws aren't torqued too tightly. Mine weren't tight. Any help is greatly appreciated.

The first thing to try is to remove the new ram and see if it will boot to the install disk. (Original system or Black Retail) If it will set a new partition (one or more) and format the drive. Then install your operating system. If it will not boot recheck all the steps you took in replacing the drive. After you get the OS installed and the computer boots we can go back to the memory upgrade. Good luck.

I checked the RAM and evidently it wasn't seated properly because it will start properly (minus the OS). My new problem involves installing the OS. In the Install process I see under "Select Destination" Select a distination volume to install the Mac OS X software." But the new HD, or anything else, does not appear. Does that mean the HD isn't seated properly?! I'm 99.9% sure it's the correct HD since I spoke with a sales rep at macsales.com and he assured me it was the right HD. Many thanks for all the help!

Well....a little more research and my naive self has learned that it merely needs to be formatted. Knowledge is power! Thank you rj713 because checking the RAM and reseating it was the beginning of my fix.
