iMac randomly shutting down, suspected faulty SMC

Hello, my iMac kept shutting down after a few minutes of use in windows, and I totally couldn’t boot to macOS as it shut down while it is booting. I reset the SMC , and it worked for a few hours, until it shut down again after a few hours. I think that chip might be faulty, but I have no idea how to replace it, and I’m not even sure if it’s causing the problem. I don’t want to replace the whole motherboard though. Please link to some guides on how to do it, or should I just have it repaired, but by who? It’s warranty has expired quite a while ago.

Update (02/28/2021)

I did an aida64 stress test in windows, the fans were ramping up like normal, and cpu temps were at around 99 which is normal for a mac. No shutdowns. I used HWmonitor to measure the temps. Idle temperatures were at around 50 to 60.

I managed to boot to windows and macOS consistently after resetting the smc, and also got to playing some games. However, trying to launch Yakuza 0 seemed to immediately turn it off. I also got to playing an indie game called Noita, and it seemed to only shut down when the game was closed. It’s not the most graphically demanding game though, and I haven’t tried anything on macOS yet.

Tried doing diagnostics, no errors. Seems to turn off when opening programs, closing programs, taking screenshots etc. Can’t be sure that those are the only times that it turns off.

@lowcheeliang - Try a different power cord. I doubt you have a RAM issue. Within macOS you would have gotten a crash report. Review your log file.

A faulty SMC wound't stop your system from booting. An over temp condition can cause SMC to ramp of the fan (which you should have noted) and then will shut down the system if it couldn't bring the temp down.

I'm suspecting that's your true issue! SMC is saving your system not the cause of the problem!

So why is my system having problems? You’ll need to do a bit of diagnostics here to figure it out! Let’s first try your onboard diagnostics. Rerstart your system and press the D key to enter. Let us know if you get any errors.

Reference: Mac startup key combinations

Sadly, diagnostics only goes so far. I’m suspecting we need to look deeper into your systems thermals. To get that information we’ll need to install a good thermal monitoring app like TG Pro. While the trial version should be enough this is one tool you should own as its so useful! All my systems have it and I’ll tell you its helped me quite a few times!

What I’m suspecting is either a messed up fan from dust buildup internally or the heat sink has failed.

I also suspected that.

Just did the diagnostics, it didn’t find any errors. However, just now when I took a screenshot in game using f12, it shut down immediately. I’m starting to think it could be an issue with the ram? But there was no blue screen or anything like that.
