Got blur/messy images, how to check it is display or logic board issue

Got messy image on my iMac (27” late 2012 model), as soon as it was turned on, can still boot up and login, get it connected with Thunderbolt Display through the thunderbolt port connection, image shows normal on the Thunderbolt Display, can I conclude that the display assembly from the iMac is out, and the logic board is still good? Is there any other possibility?

Thanks,

If the external is woking then you’ve proved the issue is within the internal display assembly 27” iMac Display Assembly, Apple P/N 661-7169

Here’s the guide to replace it iMac Intel 27" EMC 2546 Display Replacement

Thanks Dan, by the way, is there a way to have the image completely shown on external monitor (make the internal display black, and image shows up from boot up all the way to login stage)? Considering its age and price for the display, it may not be worth it to get the new display.

From within the Display control panel you can alter which display is the primary.

@danj - What about other stages like "recovery mode", can images be output into that one instead of internal display?

@hru1207 - Sorry no

@danj - If I remove the internal display and leave it unconnected, but connecting with the external display or monitor like apple Thunderbolt Display, should I see the images like apple logo, loading bar during the system booting up on it?
