shutting down randomly, replaced battery 4 months ago

Block Image

third time in three days that my laptop has shut down on its own with >50% battery left. battery listed as normal condition in system info, ran diagnostics and got PPT004. the battery is from ifixit, from October 2021. do I need to replace my battery again? is there any other reason for the random shut downs?

@danj from your comments on other shut down questions, it seems like based on coconutbattery info that I need a new battery. could you confirm?

@roborachel - Age and cycled count are reasonable.

@roborachel - Lets give this a try. carefully disconnect the battery. Place the system on its side and with noting plugged into your system press and hold the power button for a good 15 sec’s to fully discharge the logic board. Now just plug in the MagSafe charger your system should spontaneously startup. Let it fully boot up and then properly shut the system down. Now reconnect the battery and plug in your MagSafe again and this time let the system fully charge (good 8hrs)

Now restart your system run it a bit with the MagSafe disconnected letting it loose about 10% plug in the MagSafe again and load CoconutBattery it will take a 30 or so secs for the OS to update CoconutBattery you should see Power Adapter connected and Charging with XXX. Lets get a fresh snapshot and post that as well.

Was the battery new? If it was used, I think you might have bought a bad one.

Apple usually doesn’t produce faulty electronics, so I think if the battery was new we could rule out being a faulty battery.

Does the computer completely shut off or maybe just the screen goes black and you can hear sound?

If its completely off, then I think the connector that bridges the power supply (battery) and the motherboard could be having problems. I am not an expert on mac but if it is a removeable cord and its not a direct port then you should definetly replace that.

Use an electricity detector (you probably don’t have one) they sell them at places like home depot and stuff. Put the corded dectectors on the power sources where the damage might be while the computer is plugged in (beware of electrical shock, weak gloves) and see if the power is fluctuating. If it is then it is most likely damaged.

battery was new, bought directly from ifixit. computer shuts off completely. coconutbattery seems to be showing some issues, but I'm not experienced with using it.

Directly From ifixit - you might as well say directly from amazon.. Does not mean its a good battery

@andrewgolden83 - Lets not judge blindly! I have better faith in iFixit than a jobber on Amazon. They are a real brick and mortar, not someone working out of there garage. They also have a track record and will be around awhile which can’t be said of many Amazon sellers. Have you even tried getting your money back or even get a replacement if the battery was bad.
