How do I get around gpu crash?

I have a 2010 macbook pro that will boot into recovery long enough to choose the wifi network. once chosen the computer freezes then fades to a white screen while running the fans at full speed. this happens regardless of the key options. the only time it differs is when a linux (ubuntu) boot thumb drive is installed. in this case it will boot into the original grub menu (where you can select to test or install no GUI) but once you select an option it fades to light green then white.

i haven't found any other documentation of this issue and am unsure how to proceed. if its the gpu can i bypass it before install? it had a failed hdd and thats been replaced now.new thermal paste has also been added all cables have been checked and it is not liquid damaged.

also i am willing to do some soldering but will only result to that as a last ditch effort.

And for the sake of the internet: no i don't plan to just throw it out and get a new one. yes i know its old.

Do you try the onboard diagnostics (use the D key if it has the newer firmware) or use the grey diagnostic disk?

Reference: Mac startup key combinations

You might want to see what an external display shows.

Without fully diagnosing thingsI would hold off assuming the issue is the GPU.
