Can an 2230 M.2 SSD be installed on the eMMC version?

Can I install an 2230 M.2 SSD, like the 1TB Kioxia BG4, into the eMMC version of the Steam Deck? Specifically, I am wondering whether there are any considerations vis-a-vis interference with the Wi-Fi card, and whether the (NVMe-less) eMMC version even has the necessary M.2 port.

  • Yes, you can upgrade eMMC disk to NVMe disk.
  • You can reuse electromagnetic shielding from original eMMC for new disk.

This can be done. Make sure the SSD you want to install is one of the short ones shown in the teardown linked here: Steam Deck Teardown

Yep, I put a 256GB WD SN530 into mine, works absolutely perfectly. Make sure there are no chips on the backside of the drive though, it's a bit tight in there, but the BG4, being a single-chip SSD, would definitely work.

Valve makes good $@$*, I wish apple would die and Valve replaced them. Been a good company since they Moded quake or unreal was it,.. into a pro quality game. anyway. I have their steam controller. which is kinda rare now, But i have 2, and have replaced the R-bumper's (trigger) which was plastic with a metal piece folded twice kinda tricky, metal was from a tape measurer.

got my 256 SDeck and along with a 3d printer, there are countless mods , Just need creativity ... I bet the OS install on new chip wasnt too hard? was it?

Just buy an external case for the SSD, put the original in it, clone the drive to your PC, put the new SSD in the case and clone this drive back to the new SSD. Worked fine for me from 256gb to 1tb. And you have to do nothing else. You can use Macrium Reflect free for it.

@mxcombust I don't know about the OS install. I have an external M.2 enclosure, just plugged that into the deck with a keyboard and mouse (I used a USB-C to USB-A converter and a hub), then just cloned the internal drive's contents onto it with dd and fixed the partition table with the included drive partitioning utility (so that the new SSD would be recognized as 256 GB, not 64 GB). No OS install necessary, the data on the new drive was identical to the old one. The deck woke up after the operation as if nothing had happened, it just had more storage.

Vlave warned against installing SSDs that are not the originals due to differing power consumption and possibly over heating the PMIC that is supplying the power. It might work now, but you could have issues down the road. Either wait until Valve releases a QVL for SSDs or attempt to look up what the max power ratings are of the original SSD and find one that does not exceed it.

What kind of "issues down the road" can we expect? It's kind of a vague statement, and Valve has a clear incentive to upsell you on the higher capacity models instead of encouraging an SSD swap. So without further detail, I kinda doubt the relevance of this statement.

I've been using a 256GB WD SN530 in my Steam Deck (chosen for no particular reason other than I found it available) for nearly a year at this point, and so far encountered no issues whatsoever. Average active power seems to be 75 mW, according to the datasheet, and the in-game overlay reported no discernible differences after swapping the eMMC module for it.

I would be highly suspicious of any electrical design that overheats due to a few dozen extra milliwatts. Simply charging the battery likely kicks a whole lot more heat into that area of the PCB than using an SSD with a slightly higher power draw, if it's been designed with any tolerances whatsoever it will be fine.
