DC Pin on charger frayed and sparking

Hello!

I have an OEM charger for my laptop (Model number:DA130PE1-00), and after 5 years of use there are signs of wear right below the tip of the DC pin.

There are three exposed wires - green, white and black. The insulation around the white and black wires has been damaged (apparently from twisting) and the wiring within is now exposed and frayed, as can be seen in the attached picture. I just noticed sparking from where those wires are exposed while the charger was plugged in and connected to my computer, and I have two main concerns;

1) could this sparking damage the motherboard or any other components of the laptop?

2) would it be possible to safely repair the insulation with some electrical tape? Or would this fault still pose a risk to the laptop?

As an aside, this morning I had to remove the battery from my laptop because it had significantly expanded - could this wiring issue have contributed to that swelling?

If there's any more information I can provide I'd be happy to do so, and thanks for taking the time to look at this!

NO NOT USE IT. It is shorting out the adapter electronics. If you are handy, you may be able to find a replacement plug and repair it. Or you may be able to take that one apart and reconnect all the wires to eliminate the bad ones. The bad part is, Dell thinks those adapters are made of gold and price them accordingly. I have not searched for unbranded replacements. The only downside, if you find one, is that many of the cheaper units have much more RFI. That will show up as interference on a TV that may be in close proximity to it.

Just for grins, b4 I invested in another one, I would see if I could separate the wires, then fill that area with an epoxy to insulate the wires and make it ridged. Make sure the epoxy you use isn't destructive to the wires or current insulation. It is a low voltage so it does not need a lot of separation.

i dont recomend useing that because it's a fire hazard. it's a common problem with dell chargers mine falled at only one year in the same place but i recomend buying a new charger they will anywhere from £30 - £50
