Samsung UN85Au800 dark screen

I bought a UN85au8000 a little over a year ago. About 2 months after I got it, the left side of the screen went dark as though the backlighting turned off. It wasn't THAT much of an inconvenience so I just let it go. But yesterday the right side went dark too.

But then later in the day the left side lit back up. While the right side stayed dark, then the middle also went dark. Left side still good. The right side kind of flickers once in a while. I'm assuming that the backlighting itself doesn't need to be replaced since the left side came back on and the right side still flickers.

I know this is a relatively common issue, but I've never seen anyone say they've had the exact same thing happen as I have. I.e one side being off, then coming back on again eventually while the other 2/3 of the screen go "off" all in one day. Any suggestions?

I see you posted this a little over a month ago. Did you ever figure this out? I have a dark vertical bar in the middle area of the tv and can’t find useful info on how to repair.

из

@tucktuck131 what make and model is your TV? What have you checked?

из

I’ve only run the setting’s diagnostic test which didn’t detect anything.

из

I ordered a new Power supply Board and a main control board, Fedex sucks, so I'm still waiting to receive the parts, but I'll update once I actually receive them, and get them installed.

@vdub143 you are losing your backlight because of increased voltages and failures on more of them. You will need to replace the backlight array. For a panel that size, it'll be tough and you definitely will need somebody to assist you with that. You have to disassemble the panel to get to the back lights so make sure you have a second person help you to remove the LCD without flexing it. in principle it replaces like shown on here

@vdub143 @tucktuck131 This is 99% certain a backlight issue. It could be the backlight strips themselves or it could be the driver circuit. My first guess would be the LED strips, because Samsung (and other manufacturers) are known for cutting corners and using the cheapest and worst LEDs :(

You can buy a backlight tester on fex Amazon and use that to test the strips, but this is classic strip failure so unless you already have a tester it’s not that important to get one to test. They are only ~$20 so it’s a great investment though.

I’d source replacement LED strips for your model and them replace them in the set. When one strip fails, the rest are soon to follow. And when it’s alternating like in the question, then it’s imminent failure. The thing is that when the strips do permanently fail, they can take out the driver circuit and other circuitry so it’s best to get it done asap.

Changing the strips is an afternoons work and doesn’t really require anything special other than ample space and organisational skills.

That's the problem, I don't know with any degree of certainty thay the strips are bad.

As I said in the post, the left side of the TV had been dark for a year, and then it turned back on. After the right side had gone dark.

I got a new power supply board and main control board. I'm hoping that fixes it because I don't have anyone to assist me in changing the LED strips and trying to manuever and 85 inch TV by one's self is...difficult.

@vdub143 The thing about just replacing without knowing if it in fact needs replacing, is the cost goes through the roof and it isn’t very environmentally friendly. The PSU board and main control board can be a contributing cause, but experience says, the strips are the first to go.

I fully understand that handling an 85” panel alone is nigh impossible, but asking a friend, colleague, family member, etc. to help for the few minutes needed, is well worth it, even if you compensate them for their troubles. Disassembly and reassembly is a one man job, and replacing the strips themselves after removing the panel shouldn’t take many minutes.

из

Yeah, I've thought about that, but the boards were only like $120, so I figured I'd just go with the easier thing to replace first. The parts just arrived, so I'll be sure to update once I get them in.

из

Yeah, the boards didn't fix it. Going to replace the strips...if I can find any. Suppliers seem to be out of stock.

Sorry I’m posting this as an answer. It wouldn’t let me post a picture in the comments on my phone. Here is the model number and the issue. This looks similar to some other pictures I looked up of led strip failures, but that is also where the power cord is located behind the tv. I think I will definitely buy the backlight tester. Any tips on a good place to purchase led strips for a TV this size?

@tucktuck131 yup, bad backlight :-) Dang and its such a big panel too. Let'see if we can at least help you with the strips.

из

@tucktuck131 your panel requires the Samsung Backlight Strips BN96-52952A, Where are you located? Geographical area only. Don't need anything in detail

из

@tucktuck131 if you are somewhere in the USA or even CDN I would go with Shopjimmy.com (currently out of stock) but give them a holler anyway. Their service and quality of parts is par non. My second choice would be right here

Just noticed.....Welcome to iFixit :-)

@oldturkey03 I’m located in Phoenix AZ. Thanks for the help figuring this out!

из

@tucktuck131 Awesome (just so frikkin hot. Lived in LHC for a while and darn way to toasty :-)

I really hope you get this fixed. Just take your time and watch the panel when you disassemble it. Get some help when working on it and keep it straight.

Best of luck to you and the OP @vdub143
