While the G5 processors are integrated into the logic board, the early intel core Duos have removable chips that can be upgraded.

No.

according to everymac.com and other sources I've seen, the G5 iMacs have CPUs soldered to the logic board.

The processors in the G5 dual xx is mounted in quick-connectors, but You have to loosen all of the screws that keep the in place, even those place under the "G5" plate. It should be around 10-12 screws with either t10 torx screws, or small phillips screws. It can have one of those two configs, but when first removed, taking out the CPU is a straight forward task.

@mayer: A G5 dual comes in several configurations, so the "xx" simply mean that you replace them with the processor-size ex: G5 dual 1.8, G5 dual 2.0, ... etc.

@mayer: No, that had slipped my eyes. I'll shut my mouth ;-)

By using the scale I normally do! I have upgraded about 6 pc's and 4 mac's using the same scale by using the scale I use! You should be able to upgrade to about 2.25ghz from 1.8 2.2ghz for sure! All I can say is prices on ebay have never been cheaper!

Good Luck!

Lol No I have always just multiplied the origional speed by 1.25 LOL and weather it has been a Mac. or pc So far for me it has worked even when I have goon from a single core to a duel core. it has worked. Yes I know he said iMac not power mac. Just like a lot of the older systems came with socketed chips then Apple went soldered in!!! A friend of mine is right now waiting on a chip from ebay to upgrade his mini When we upgraded his Hard drive and Ram I told him about it. So he wants to try a fraction faster going from 2.0ghz to 2.4. So hope his works!. His has a t7200 2ghz has a bid on ebay for a t7600 2.33ghz which is same socket max speed for that socket under the merom chips.

A guide I have used for chips etc can be linked here. http://forum.notebookreview.com/hardware...
