Cpu upgrade for my iMac 2017 21"

Currently my Imac running so slow and laggy, so im thinking about upgrade it. Can i upgrade my imac cpu to I7 8850H or I7 9850H (qnvh unit of course)? If not, can i swap this a1418 logic board to something like a2116 logic board?

While upgrading the CPU is possible, are you sure that’s the reason?

Often times I find the storage (HDD and/or SSD) is the root issue. As an example a HDD over time gets it’s files fragmented, more so when the drive is 2/3rds full. For SSD’s need more free space so they are able to do wear leveling. A too full SSD will get bogged down as it needs to be more aggressive moving older data to more worn blocks to free up the less worn blockS they where using for the newer data.

Then we have Apples Fusion Drive which is even more complex as the SSD is used to cache so a worn drive can make the system crawl!

So… what is your current drive/s? Also what is your RAM size.

I did upgrade my hdd to samsung 870 500gb and 2x8gb ddr 2400hz from crucial. So i really think its about my cpu. Its an quadcore i5. I really don't want to build a hackintosh machine but if i can't upgrade to an 6 - 8 core cpu. I think i will do it.

@Co Ky - The best CPU this series can support is 3.6 GHz Core i7 (I7-7700). Sadly Your systems firmware and thermal system can’t support anything higher.

I’m wondering if you still have a storage issues here. Some people forget they got a Fusion Drive’d system which has a second SSD drive hidden on the backside of the logic board (blade SSD). If it’s present it will slow your system down.

@danj Great thank for your information. I forgot to mention my system slow down when im using logic pro x and my mac just has hdd, its not a fusion system one. And can i swap my logic board to a2116 logic board? I think it the last think worth to consider upgrade. If it not i think i have to go to hacknitosh root.

@Co Ky - your slow down is both RAM if you still have 8GB up it to as least 16GB, more if you can, if you are doing large projects 32 GB.

HDD’s are great for deep storage, terrible for apps which are constantly working with sizable data sets. You really need a SSD. The problem you face is the HDD systems don’t offer the blade SSD port components. So it’s a swap out, replacing the HDD with a SSD.

So now you’ll need to think though your budget and if you can find a used system which offers what you need here Vs upgrading yours.

i did mention in my previous comment that i upgraded both memory(from 2x4gb to 2x8gb) and storage (hdd 1tb to ssd 870 500gb) and my imac is not that fusion one. Now i just wonder can i swap an a2116 logic board to my imac, does it fit and work? And yes, my mac is a1418 imac i5 7400.

Hello Co Ky, sorry to message you two years after, but I'm also thinking about replacing my hdd to ssd and maybe the cpu also. I have the same imac 2017 21.5" and already 16gb of ram installed.

Do you think it's worth the case to do these upgrade ? Or you did not noticed any differences ?

I'm also composing music mostly on Ableton and from times to times Logic pro, also web developping using Docker Desktop, Node JS, etc.

Thank you in advance,

Jonathan
