Portafilter - Busted and probably unfixable... need suggestions.

So I bought that little L-spring to fix my portafilter and discovered that a peg seems to be missing to attache the one side.

I tried jerry-rigging it by adding a screw where the missing post is and it didn't power up then pop when drawing a shot.

I've seen suggestions and they're all pretty sketchy.

The newer and disappearing version of portafilter isn't cheap, but seems built cheap.

Does anyone know if the portafilter for the HD8325 (Poemia) units works with ours? It looks like it should and those portafilters are available and cheap: Philips Encompass

Encompass didn't answer my question if the Poemia portafilter is compatible. They only said the part to my unit has been discontinued and is no longer available.

Kind of weird.

I'm seriously considering buying one, trying it, and possibly swapping out pieces because the original was more solid.

Someone needs to test that for compatibility. At $28 it's a good solution.

I ordered a Poemia part. I paid a few dollars more on Amazon, but returns are easier with them.

I will report back.

It's a match. Side by side. Original Estro Vapore portafilter and Poemia filter.

About the only difference is that they used a lighter metal. There was a slight change in indentations that prevented me from removing the mechanics from the inside and swapping them.

EDIT: Tried again, and yes, all the internal components can be swapped out. So if you want to restore an original portafilter so you have the solid build, you can buy one of these and swap everything from the plastic round with a gasket, to the internal mechanisms and springs.

Since a couple replacement parts cost the same as a whole portafilter, I got my nerve up, gutted my newer portafilter and inserted all the pieces into the metal portion of my old portafilter from the late 90's.

All the springs and mechanisms may be the same, but the new one weighs 6-3/4 oz less because it's made of light (probably cheaper) metal.

And yes, it stays hot longer when brewing. Glad I did this.

my Estro Vapore has a different portafilter. It is all metal with a metal cube dangling out of the center hole (where the one pictured has the big spring). I either lost a piece when cleaning, or put it together wrong cuz the water comes straight out of the hoke where the bigger screw is, I would love to see the assembly for the version I have , or to find a replacement portafilter.

Hi Stan,

No idea on the cross-compatibility issue, but that slot where the spring is supposed to have a post reminded me of something, and I finally remembered what it was. The last time I replaced the toilets in my house, I used the exact type of screw you need to secure the toilet bowl to the flange on the floor. The bolts have thin oval heads, which you'd need in order to slide under the base, then maybe a thin washer on top and the thinnest nut you can find to go on top.

Obviously an actual toilet flange bolt is going to be too big for what you need, but if it was me I'd head to the hardware store and start poking through the drawers for something like that.

I had one other thought as well. If you take that spring at the bend where it's supposed to go onto the retaining post and bend it downward 90 degrees, you could drill a hole just big enough for the wire to go into. Shove the wire into the hole, and then bend the end on the other side of the base plate so it can't pop back out.
