Can you hear the HDD spin up when the laptop is first started?

Check in BIOS to find out whether the HDD is being detected at all.

If not the HDD may have failed.

If it is shown in BIOS what OS (operating system) is installed in the laptop, Win7, Win8.1, Win10 etc?
