@fredshepherd sounds like an issue with the sensor. Try cleaning the outside of the sensor. You said with the light on when you open the door. try with the light off and see if that makes a difference. I wonder if your door throws some sort of shadow that activates the sensor. Let us know the exact make and model of your dryer so we can try and dig deeper.
