My macbook won't turn on. After plugging it to the wall, it still doesn't turn on. The base of the laptop heats up really fast (~ 10 seconds plugged in) and starts to smell like burning.

There are a few possible issues that can explain this. The first it the battery is no longer functioning properly. Which is why the system heats up. The other is the charging logic within the main logic board has failed.
