I see you mention the Late 2013 iMac, my question is would the Samsung 870 EVO work on a Late 2013 iMac?
I tried with an external SSD, there's no difference, it still grasps for air. OR would you suggest another better solution?

I’m not sure I follow you here. An external drive faces the limits of its I/O connection be it USB3 or Thunderbolt2. So you do need to consider that. Thunderbolt2 is the better external interface.
If you want performance the better internal I/O would be the blade interface using either an Apple drive or OWC.iMac Intel 21.5" Retina 4K Display (2017) Blade SSD Replacement Vs the SATA III interface iMac Intel 21.5" Retina 4K Display (2017) Hard Drive Replacement.

Just wanted to mention that if you have a failing internal hard drive, even if you boot into an externally connected SSD you may still get some slowness or weird behavior if the system is trying to mount or interact with the failing hard drive. Disconnecting the internal hard drive and replacing it with an SSD would prevent that.
