Why did my screen develop a darker area on the bottom edge?

My T430s worked perfectly for 10 years, but suddenly developed a darker area on the bottom edge when I turned it on one day. At first, I thought it was a broken backlight problem, but the darker area sometimes expanded to a wider area along the bottom edge after a power and lid cycle, and even more occasionally, it could disappear, when the problem first occurred. Nowadays, this darker triangle remains pretty stable.

The laptop had been hit or dropped, and has been used as a desktop (less mobile) for work. A friend at Lenovo suggested reinstalling the graphics driver, and I did, but the problem persisted.

As this laptop is still strong and perfect for my use cases (coding projects and online video streaming), especially after I upgraded the RAM and SSD a couple of years ago, I'd like to fix it if it's just a cable problem or so. What's the most likely cause for this? If you could kindly highlight the potentially broken parts (better with a name and picture) and guides for replacement/repair, I'll be very grateful.

@elarry this sure does look like a failing LED on your displays backlight. The reason why it is not yet consistent could be that it not yet completely failed. Lower your screen brightness and see if that changes the shape or even makes it go away. Lowering the power lowers the current and may keep it lit longer. Depending on the actual display assembly the backlight and diffuser boards etc may be part of the panel. You will have to remove it. Of course, check the filter capacitors around the display connector and make sure all of those work properly.

Arghhhhh! I was hoping it was not as bad...

I dimmed the backlight but the darker area remained. However, I noticed something interesting, though - when the display recovers from power saving, there was a 1 second moment when the darker area is gone, and then it returns. Is it also suggesting that the backlight is aging and unstable? If yes, should I replace the whole panel?

Many thanks!

@elarry it sure sounds that way. I do not like to sound so negative but I would think that replacing the screen assembly is most likely the best way of getting your screen back to 100% illumination
