Battery charges in sleep/off mode only

I am experiencing an unusual problem with my 15" MacBook Pro, mid-2018 model. It only charges when it is in sleep or turned off, but fails to charge when it is in use. I have been utilizing the original charger and cable provided with the device. Although the battery has been replaced with a high-quality one, with a cycle count of approximately 16, its performance is satisfactory. I am curious to know what might be causing this issue. I have already attempted an SMC/PRAM reset.

Have you try using the different ports? Try the other three.

Clearly you have a power switching logic issue. If your lucky it’s only one ports power controller. If not the TPS51980A power controller which the ports power passes through to the logic board.

I have indeed tested all the ports, and I've noticed that occasionally the battery starts charging when using the same charger or port, while at other times it does not.

I have yet to do a clean instal of the OS.

@beebah - I would take the ports out so you can clean the or if needed replace them.

Refreshing the OS likely won’t change anything. Every time I’ve had to deal with charging issues it’s either a dirty port or the switch logic is messed up on the logic board.

Ports are already clean as they work fine for data transfer. I can hear the charging chim once the charger connected. But the battery icon says "battery is not charging".

@beebah - The data lines and power lines are independent, so it’s possible the data lines are working, unlike the power. There are multiple lines so you might have a few not working.

I would start there, then it’s the power switching logic.
