@prudence since it does give you an error message, you know it is not a settings issue. This sounds like a failed fingerprint reader. You can use something like this video as your guide.

Now, if that does not repair your fingerprint reader, you will have to do a deeper check. Here is the Samsung flowchart for the Fingerprint Sensor not working

Use the search function of your PDF reader to locate the components to be checked, from this document A125 Component Layout

While you work on your phone, take lots of pictures. Once you are done with it, take those pictures and create a guide for iFixit. That will help the next person that has the same problem as you do. It's easy and fun to create these guides. https://ifixit.com/Guide/new The iFixit community will appreciate this.

The fingerprint sensor is a separate ribbon cable and, unfortunately on this model, it is not secured in any way other than friction. That cable disconnecting is one of the most common issues with this device.

Luckily, it is one of the easiest to fix, as well. It requires only a minute and no specialty tools. Of course, you can always use iFixit opening tools and picks to make some steps easier.

Before working on your phone, always turn it off.

Remove the sim card. If you do not have an ejection pin, a paperclip will do. Pop off the back of the phone (there is no adhesive and you can do so with just your fingernails). It is snapped on with pressure clips that release easily. You will have to go around all 4 sides and it may take a bit if you are unsure. Just be gentle and take your time.

Lift the phone back gently; with the glass facing down and the top of the phone upwards, open it like a book written in English where you pretend the left side is a hinge and open from the right side, laying the back down next to the phone on the left.

There should be a ribbon cable attached to the back. it is on the right of the back. If it is connected to the phone, find where it is connected and disconnect it. This requires nothing more than gently prying with a fingernail.
If it is not connected to the phone, you'll see on the rest of the phone a plastic frame over the motherboard (top side, above battery), and right below the cameras, a small square in the plastic frame that has circuit board exposed and a press connector.

Find the fitting on the end of the ribbon cable from the back of the phone, and connect it again to the press connector, making sure it is seated firmly.

Put the back on again, making sure to get all the snaps connected on all sides, and turn the phone back on. Test your fingerprint reader. If it was this very common issue, congratulations, you fixed it! If that did not solve it, the problem is likely a faulty reader or a damaged connector or ribbon cable, which can usually (though not always) be fixed by replacing the whole reader/cable assembly that is attached to the back of the phone. But definitely attempt connecting/reconnecting it first, as that happens to this particular model way too often.

Hi Prudence,

There are a couple of reasons why your fingerprint sensor may have quit working, but without looking at the phone it's hard to say exactly what the problem is. I'm thinking it could either be a loose connection inside the phone, or possibly the sensor has failed and needs to be replaced.

Since the power button and the fingerprint sensor are built into the same part, it might help to know if the power button is working or not.

Either way, if it was my phone, my first idea would be to open up the rear cover and check the connector. I wasn't able to find a guide for your phone specifically, but I did locate one for the Galaxy A12 Nacho; I'm hoping yours isn't significantly different from that one.

Manuals / Samsung Galaxy A12 Nacho / Fingerprint sensor and power button

Anyway, take a look at Step 1 of the guide that shows how to remove the rear panel; that's the connector you want to check. Verify that it's firmly plugged in and hasn't worked its way loose over time. If that doesn't help, try unplugging it and then clean both the cable and the connector on the board with some 90% or higher concentration of isopropyl (rubbing) alcohol. While you're at it, take a magnifying glass and check both sides for any bent or broken pins; sometimes bent pins can be straightened with some fine tip tweezers, but broken pins will probably require you to replace parts. Check that and let us know what you find.

So if you get this far and still can't get it working, then it may well be time to try replacing the power button/fingerprint sensor. Here's one example from Amazon, but you'll need to check your model number to see if it's a match; the device page for your phone calls it model SM-125, but the Amazon page says their button is for the SM-125F. I don't know if they're compatible or not, but you should be able to find one specific to your phone if it's not a SM-125F.

Good luck; let us know what you find!
