Black screen for 5 minutes after replacing hdd with ssd

Hi,

After installing new sata ssd my imac boots with black screen. It stays like that for 5 minutes and then login screen appears. No apple boot logo or error or progress bar. Straight black screen(without back light)and then straight to login screen. I can hear chime and usb has power. All diagnostic leads lights up. If I let it sleep or restart computer it again takes 5 minutes to light up screen.

Do you have other boot disks connected? (USB installer, your old drive, etc…). I have seen this occur before when it’s trying to identify all the other boot drives

Nothing else is connected to my imac. I think this may be related to temperature sensor. As ifixit kit for a1418 has an adapter with builtin temp sensor. But no way to test it

@kamilzurel94091 Is the fan running very heavily? If not, it’s unlikely to be an issue with a thermal sensor. But I see where your thinking is going. What version of macOS are you running? Also, was your Mac one that has a Fusion Drive, or it just had the HDD?

@kamilzurel94091 - I doubt the issue is a thermal sensor.

But! You could have a simple problem. Let’s do this in a dim room do you see a dim glow? Also try a lit flashlight resting on the screen at a sharp angle, do you see a faint image of your desktop and its icons?

@kamilzurel94091 - Do you see a glow in a dim room from the display?

No. Display is dead for 5 minutes from start and then login screen appears and everything is working

@kamilzurel94091 - What I was trying to do was to get us a data point to help us focus. There are two circuits at play here, the backlight and the creation of the image to the display.

As we know the image does show up we have to assume the display is working. But we still don’t know which part isn’t.

So if I flip a coin here I would guess the backlight is failing Vs the T-CON, but that’s just an educated guess!

@kamilzurel94091 - Had another thought! Check the NV-RAM battery! I suspect it might be dead. What happens is the system has to reconfigure it’s self when the settings are lost so that could explain the delay.

This often happens when you use a switched power outlet as the vampire power from the line is not present so the battery is used. The outlet the system is plugged into could also have a sensor to prevent the power drain some outlet strips offer this feature.
