The Early 2009 Mac Pro—also known as the Mac Pro 4,1—introduced Intel's Nehalem architecture to Apple's line of professional desktop computers in March 2009. The Mac Pro 5,1 used the same interior design but received further CPU updates in 2010 and 2012.

The electrolytic capacitors often fail Remember this system was built at the very end of the Capacitor Plague I'm sure some bad parts lingered around a bit. See if any look puffy or leaky.

While a bit dangerous you might want to test the AC side of the supply to see if power is getting in and then check the voltage along the main rails to the DC side. Sometimes I find an oscilloscope can be helpful if one side of the AC to DC rectification is messed up.

Does the system respond in any way?

As usually happens with this models PSU failure starts slowly, one or two reboots a day. Then they start failing more frequently for about a month until they just don't boot at all. I have seen this several times. I was hoping to find a common point of failure as the replacement cost remains about $100. If it's just a couple of caps, i need to know which ones.

@mayer - It’s been so long since I’ve worked on one I just can’t tell you which as it’s not so cut and dry.

I would look for signs of failure and using a DVM measure the voltages.

But this could be a logic board issue as well. We had a few 2012 systems which the CPU power regulator logic messed up.
