Washer fills with water then makes strange mechanical noise and shakes

Bought 3 year old Whirlpool Cabrio wtw8000dw5 washing machine and dryer from a friend. Worked perfectly at their home. Got it to our basement, set up. Everything looks fine except the washing machine fills with water, then makes a strange mechanical noise and rotates back and forth (doesn't spin) and continues to do that. Please help this is such a bummer.
