Known as the ''PS2'', it is a sixth-generation video game console first released by Sony in Japan in March 2000. The United States saw it later in 2000 with the SCPH-30000. Repair of this device requires only common tools, but can get tricky.

Installed the PicFix mod and now the console won't read discs

I installed the PicFix mod for V9 consoles in my 50001 model PS2, and I'm 99% sure I soldered everything correctly, but when I put the console back together, it wouldn't read any discs. The drive still spins up and everything, just doesn't read the games. Any advice?

I tried both insulating the board from the K wire (see image and @dadibrokeit's response) such that the exposed wire is not able to touch any other components on the board, and disconnecting and reconnecting all the connectors attached to the optical drive. I'm not sure which fixed it but the disc drive is now working again! Thank you to @dadibrokeit and @oldturkey03 for your helpful answers.

I'm not specifically familiar with the mod you're doing, but I've done my own share of mods on the OG NES, so I've been there before.

Regarding what you're doing, I found an interesting picture that you might be familiar with or not.

Based on that, I'm a little concerned about your "K" connection to the board. There seems to be a lot more exposed wire than is necessary, and I'm afraid that bare wire is touching another resistor and possibly causing problems.

The only other thing that stands out to me is the concern about the resistor that's called for on the "J" line. I suspect yours is there on the circuit board but can't tell from your photo. I assume it's in the spot pointed to by the arrow in this picture.

Yes, I've used that picture to help with soldering to each point correctly, and the 2.2 kΩ resistor is there and was actually already included with the board, fortunately. I tried both insulating the board from the K wire such that the exposed part can no longer touch anything else on the board and disconnecting and reconnecting all the connectors attached to the optical drive. I'm not sure which fixed it but the disc drive is now working again! Thank you very much for your helpful advice and your time.

@thedoctor50 not sure what this mod is or what it is supposed to do. All I know is that I am not fond of mods and it is possible that something got shortened out by either the soldering or the long leads. If nothing else, double check your solder work and the run of the cables. I would suggest that you start off by removing the mod and then re-evaluate. If it is still the same after, you'll need to check your board for any short as well as the ODD itself.
