Do I need an adapter to replace my SSD or not?

I hope this isn't a silly question, I'm new to this.

I had a 128GB SSD and it has completely failed, I had been running into trouble with it off and on for the past year. I wiped it clean and reinstalled the OS a couple of months ago just hoping it would carry me but this past week it failed to the point it doesn't even show up in the disk utility any longer. I'd like to upgrade to 1TB, I read the SSD replacement guide but I was confused about the mention of an adapter, if I were to buy the Upgrade Bundle listed on ifixit, would I need an adapter?
If so what would be the best place to acquire one?
Also is there a guide for how to install the adapter if I have to use one?

I appreciate any help (explanations in the simplest terms would be most appreciated).

It can be a bit confusing 🤷🏻‍♂️🤦🏻‍♂️

Apple created their own blade style drives as the M.2 standards group efforts where taking to long for them and Apple didn’t want people upgrading on their own as they didn’t want to loose the income of selling a new system to you. To be fair all industries do this in some form or another.

Ok, back to upgrading… Even though Apple tried to lock us in they finally relented! OWC managed to reverse engineer what Apple did and created a pin compatible SSD drive and through the years have managed to produce multiple versions as Apple refined their drives. The Aura Pro X2 SSD drive in this upgrade kit MacBook Air 13" Early 2017 Blade SSD Upgrade Bundle is that drive and you don’t need any adapter.

Independent of OWC someone created an adapter to allow you to use a M.2 SSD instead. These adapters have faced issues of reliability and as the M.2 standard drives don’t offer Apples custom lines SSDs often don’t last if you are a heavy user.

I don’t recommend these adapters and M.2 SSDs. It’s just not a dependable solution for advanced amateurs and working pros which is my clients.

Thank you so much! I was panicking!

I have gone into devices before and replaced things inside but it always makes me a bit anxious in the beginning and reading about the adapter threw me for a loop. I found the wording a bit confusing at the top, but you explained it well!

@jenniferregis - Sorry I was trying to sympathize with the emojis! Hands Up - in despair and Covered Face - as I don’t want this confusion.

If you’re set don’t forget to score the answer and accept it -Thanks!
