Montior won't turn on after upgrading CPU

Hello. I have an old Dell Dimension T450 that I got as a project to play some old 90's/early 2000s games. I am trying to upgrade from the computers 450mhz Pentium iii to a 600mhz version I purchased. Unfortunately, I can't even get the monitor to come on with the new CPU installed. I am assuming it may be that the BIOS needs an update since the PC has all original hardware. I was digging around on Google but couldn't find much information. The motherboard model is AA 722394-109 and the cpu is another Pentium iii but a 600Mhz version. 600B/512/133/2.05V S1.

Any help would be appreciated.

Hi @jeremyickes,

What diagnostics lights are turned on (if any), on the back of the PC?

из

@jayeff There are three lights labeled "A B C D" on the back of the case and they are all amber except for C, which is green. The PC sounds like its trying to boot and It's not shutting off abruptly or anything like that so that's why I assumed it may be driver related.

@jeremyickes

Was it a known working CPU that you installed?

Looking at the systems reference guide for the model series, the diagnostic light pattern you describe indicates a CPU problem. (see p.3 of 53)

What BIOS version in installed? You may have to reinstall the old CPU to find out.

Here's a link that has a download for BIOS Ver. A11 for Dimension XPS T series PCs, you might want to try.

Hi @jeremyickes

I don't think your new CPU will work.

Rereading the reference guide, it shows that it only supports CPUs with 100MHz FSB and you have installed a 133MHz FSB CPU. (see p.29 of 53)

Thanks for the link to the bios version. I'm going to update it regardless to avoid issues in the future but yeah you're right I don't' think this thing is going to work on this motherboard. Does this mean there's no chance of switching to a higher performance CPU on this PC?

@jeremyickes

The best that the specifications show is this one but I doubt that you'll get too much of a performance upgrade.

You might but it may depend on the software you're trying to run and then how much ram is installed. The max supported PC-100 ram is only 768MB (i.e. 0.768GB, not even 1GB of ram)

You'll probably find that it is the Intel 440BX/AGPset chipset on the motherboard that is the limiting factor.

It doesn't support more than100MHz FSB
