How do I turn on a acer aspire laptop that haven't been used in years

Here is basically what happening here. It's an acer aspire one from my parents that hasn't been used since we moved out in our second home. I was hoping to retrieve some old files and music from my parents and use it again for school activities but it cant turn on. So here's the problem;

Whenever i press the power button, the button lights up and the fans go on full rpm, after that, for a moment the components seem to gone completely silent and seems to be not working but after like 3 minutes the fan starts running like normal and the harddrive makes a clicking for a short time than the clicking stops, after that the harddrive sounds like a normal drive, no clicking and spinning just fine from the sound of it. And the laptop seems to be heating up to like a normal laptop in the keyboard and the touchpad area. The heat seems to come from under ( i think ) the either the ram or card slot thing area, maybe even the morherboard. I have tried connecting a external monitor, the vga cable was pretty nice and tight and not loose, after all of that still no output on the screen or the monitor.

I have already asked reddit about this, but it is sure taking a while to get a response. What could be the problem here? Please let me know

Welp. Still no display on the laptop or the external monitor, guess ill buy a spare ram

@kashosoft I am confused. Are you the original poster of the question? If not, then we have possibly not addressed your issues. What make and model computer and what issues does it have?

Pull the primary battery and see. Sometimes, when these old laptops sit too long and drain to 0V, the BMS WILL SELF-BRICK FOR SAFETY. The problem is that this very often disables the ability to boot due to the BIOS not liking the disabled battery if the programming is bad enough the machine doesn't ignore it. If that doesn't help, the Acer motherboards are a little sensitive to CMOS battery voltage; it may be related if it doesn't turn on without the primary battery installed. Sometimes plugging it in without the battery after holding the power button for ~1 minute helps too.

If neither works, you can pull the hard drive and get the data off that way. This is XP-era hardware, and it's a complete joke to get in without any encryption on the drive like Bitlocker (Spoiler alert: This never happened outside of smart businesses back then). XP is such an insecure mess I have gotten into my dad's XP computer through the hidden admin account to see if it was easy. And what makes it worse is XP stores the user files in the Documents and Settings folder in the user account (which you can dump onto another drive and have nearly restriction-free access; again, M$ didn't lock it down even with the ability to do so given XP uses NTFS!!!). Use that in your favor to dump the data off the drive, especially given the OS was so insecure even with an admin password on the hidden account. At one point, I casually worked around it in high school and taught the class how to do real security.

As far as the netbook, the issue with trying to revive it is that these were abysmal new and haven't gotten better. The Atom chip these all used was low-end, and they were a product of the 2007 GFC (and built accordingly). Unless you need a small XP machine around, you can do better (see old Dell E series computers, mainly the E6X00/10).

None of these issues are in Vista-present. Microsoft (kind of) learned their lesson after XP SP0 was a security disaster, but they didn't take notes about the admin account being so abuse-friendly until Vista. These are historical issues, and these systems are largely quarantined or deprecated.

Tried pulling the primary battery and plugged it in and here's what happened;

laptop's power button lights up and the fan goes on full rpm and does the normal stuff fan is running normal the harddrives not clicking and just spinning from the sound of it. still no output on the monitor

@ihatethenewye Replace the RAM module and see, but try to reseat it first (cleaning the contacts on the module with IPA may help). I think these use DDR2, so look for a 2GB PC2-6400 SODIMM. It will probably downclock to 667MHz, but that's normal for the Atom machines. Guide can be found here.

The fact it started tells me the pack probably had a cell dead short, which took out the laptop temporarily.

I will try to clean the ram once i buy an ipa, i have already tried reseating the ram and that did nothing too. I'm going to buy another ram if the cleaning method doesn't work, was pretty surprised how cheap these rams are. This is also the first time the laptop worked without it's primary battery, the first time i tried pulling out the battery and plugged it in without it, it would only work for 3-5 minutes before turning itself off.

If this last resort method doesn’t work, i will either beg for a solution or just take it to a computer fixing shop to replace the cmos or display.

@ihatethenewye see if you can enter your BIOS. I think for your computer you do that by pressing and holding the F2 key, then pressing the power button. If it does enter the BIOS, check for your HDD. This "the hard drive makes a clicking for a short time than the clicking stops" would worry me that this may actually be an issue with the HDD. You can also pull it and try to start your computer. See if it gives you a no boot device error. Acer Aspire One D250-1151 Hard drive Replacement

@doubleabatteries why not just replace the CMOS battery? Just use something like this video to work on it. It'll get you to your motherboard and should help you to replace the battery. It'll also give you an option to clean the air vents etc.

If you just want to get the data of the HDD just get an external HDD enclosure for the 2.5" SATA HDD and access the HDD with another computer. If I remember right form my own computer, the HDD was not encrypted. At least you can give it a try.
