Acer Nitro 17 freezes when playing games

This laptop is relatively new as I have only had it for only about a year. This started as a minor annoyance that only would happen every once in a while but now it has become nearly impossible to do anything on this laptop that puts any kind of stress on it, primarily gaming. What happens is I will be playing a game and after about five minutes, the screen will go black and totally freeze. The lights on the keyboard continue to change colors and everything but I have to manually shut it off with the power key. Sometimes it will bluescreen but that has only happened about three times. When it has bluescreened, it has given me the codes, stop code: CL and clock_watchdog_timeout. This is getting very frustrating and for the more than $1,000 I spent on this laptop, I would expect it to work perfectly for more than just a single year. Also I have ran many deep malware scans and there are no viruses of any kind. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

If you open Device Manager, you can see if there are any devices that may need driver updates, and updating the drivers could resolve your issue. You could also use Event Viewer to see if you can get more information about the problem, or use Windows Memory Diagnostic to check for memory issues.

Are there any specific drivers I should check? I checked many of them but every one I tried didn’t have any updates. The memory diagnostic didn’t bring up any answers. I have already checked the event viewer everytime it has bluescreened but never really got the answer I was looking for. I feel it’s either my ram or OS based from some other forums that I have read on other sites and from researching the error codes I received from the BSOD but I’m not 100%. I’m just trying to be sure before I start taking stuff apart or going through backing everything up. My windows is completely up to date as well.

@shelby53409 If you want to use the system file checker to see if it may fix the problem, you can open a command prompt and run sfc /scannow to repair your system files. The problem with system instability is that it can have a lot of different causes, so it's good to rule out as many causes as possible through hardware checks. Your BIOS may also provide options for hardware diagnostics, or have an option to change all BIOS settings to their default values to see if the BIOS settings may be causing problems. From what I've looked up, the clock_watchdog_timeout error seems to be related to the CPU, so you might want to check BIOS settings related to the CPU. If you do end up opening the computer, I would check for possible CPU cooling issues, but I try to err on the side of exhausting all software-related solutions first before resorting to opening up the computer.

Also, while you're in the command prompt, you can use chkdsk /r /f to check your disk for errors. It might fix the problem, it might not, but regardless it's good to run occasionally.

check your drivers. I had that issue with my own laptop I received as an Xmas gift even tho I don't use it for gaming, but instead for college work. What's the specs for the laptop? 16 or 32GB ram? Intel or AMD CPU?
