Can't get the back cover off

I need to replace the battery in my Moto G 5G (2022). It looks like the pictures in the guide.

I'm trying to get the back cover off per the instructions. I've tried the plastic pry tool that came with the battery, some thin stainless steel pry tools I bought, and I've tried heating the cover joint area with a heat gun. I can't get a pry tool in. I'm pretty sure I'm prying in the right place. I'm chewing up the cover pretty bad, but just can't get a pry tool in.

I'm pretty experienced at taking things apart and fixing them, but this is getting real frustrating. Is there some trick I'm missing?

Thanks for any help or advice...

Thanks for your reply. I'm not trying to remove the screen, just the back cover (I don't know what you mean by "back glass"). The cover is not glued, it snaps on. I've taken back covers off other phones before without trouble; this one is much tougher to get off and has me stuck.

Motorola is famous for using very strong adhesive on the back glass. I've found that making sure the area you are prying is as hot as you can possibly stand (just barely too hot too hold) and using a safety razor to pry up the back glass. I'd also pry at the top to avoid puncturing the battery, and then switch to a thin plastic piece to cut the glue along the edges, like this one: Plastic Cards

Hope this helps!

Update (03/15/25)

My bad, I thought this one had a glass back that was glued on, not plastic.

I did find the guide for it: Motorola Moto G 5G (2022) Back Cover Replacement

It looks like it kind of opens from the screen on step one. The area where the SIM tray is will have thinner plastic, so it'll be a bit easier to get it to come off. just be careful around the volume controls, and I wouldn't use anything metal since you could puncture the battery.

Got it! Your suggestion to start near the SIM card slot was the key. Thanks! I'll accept your original answer in case that helps you...

@jimconnell2853 you've checked step 3 of the guide to make sure you are at the right seam? Those plastic snaps form a tight fit and really require something thin and sturdy. For stubborn cases like this I usually use a putty knife or razor blade scraper.

I'd stay away from heat since that will only soften the snaps which might make it even more difficult to get them to unsnap.
