Use the seam ripper to rip the stitches of the hem by going under the thread. This increases the chance of precision and prevents injury to fingers.

Make sure to hold the seam ripper with your index finger pointing outwards and aligning it with the sharp side of the seam ripper at the bottom (look at the third picture in this step).

If you are a minor, recommended having adult supervision as sharp object is involved.
