This past Saturday, October 26th, 2024, Restarters Firenze marked a fantastic milestone – ten years of empowering the community to repair, reduce waste, and promote sustainability. We’re thrilled to have been part of the celebration in Florence, where people from all over Italy gathered to share knowledge, repair tools, and bond over a mutual commitment to reduce e-waste. Representing iFixit, Sara, our Italian translator, joined the festivities and shared her experience:
“It was amazing to spend the day with other repair-minded people and share all the ways we can do our part in making the world a better and less wasteful place. It was especially heartwarming seeing the kids excited about repair and ready to bring a repair manifesto to school on Monday!”
A Day Full of Inspiration and Repairs

The event kicked off with a burst of energy in Florence’s open air, with people gathered to repair, discuss sustainability, and enjoy the day. From laptops to household items, each repair station saw lively conversations and hands-on activity, all dedicated to reducing waste.
One of the standout moments was a conversation between Ugo Vallauri, co-founder of The Restart Project, and Mike Cavanagh from Repair Café Pavia. Their talk, held at 3:30 PM, covered the importance of local repair communities and how initiatives like Restarters Firenze are essential for cultivating a culture of reuse and repair. It was inspiring to see these two prominent figures in the repair community exchange ideas and discuss the impact of their work on a global scale.
The Repair Community: Sharing Knowledge Across Borders

Sara was delighted to connect with other repair enthusiasts, including Gianni from Restarters Firenze and the delegation from Repair Café Pavia, which Mike Cavanagh had joined. These connections underscore the importance of collaboration in the repair movement, bridging communities to share resources, tips, and encouragement. Sara noted that everyone at the event was eager to hear about iFixit’s mission and tools and to learn how they could get involved with repairs themselves.
One particularly notable contribution from the community is a repair guide by a Restarters Firenze volunteer. It outlines the steps for replacing the airbag battery in a Dainese D-Air Street motorcycle jacket—a crucial repair for those who rely on this safety device. You can check out the guide here: Sostituzione batteria airbag Dainese.
Join Us in Making Repair Accessible to All
As we look back on this memorable day, we’re reminded of the power of community and the importance of repair as a cornerstone of sustainability. Seeing the kids’ curiosity and eagerness to make a difference reflects a growing awareness and commitment to sustainability among the next generation, which inspires us even more. We’re honored to have been part of the Restarters Firenze anniversary celebration and look forward to seeing what the next decade holds for repair advocates across the globe.
Here’s to many more years of repairs, learning, and community! 🌍
