Battery Won’t Charge
Your battery is not charging while in the charger, and does not hold charge for long once in use.
Faulty Connection
When placing your battery to charge, make sure that the battery snaps into the charger similarly to how it snaps into the drill. The battery will not begin to charge until this snap has occurred.
Charging Inconsistency
While charging your batteries, keep the battery between 65-75 degrees, making sure to never keep it below 60 or above 80, to ensure that the batteries are accurately being charged. Charging outside of this temperature range will shorten battery life to some degree, ultimately shortening the amount of time the drill can hold its charge while in use.
Faulty Battery
Once the battery on the drill begins to die, take the battery out and place it to charge. By doing this, you avoid running the battery down to nothing which over time diminishes the life of the battery. Consistently taking care of the battery by charging it as soon as the battery life runs low will ensure that the battery holds its charge for the maximum amount of time possible while in use.
Drill Chuck
The drill chuck will not respond.
Dirt and Debris
Clean the chuck thoroughly to remove any excess debris that may hinder the drill’s movement. If the chuck is still unresponsive after thorough cleaning, you may need to replace your chuck.
Trigger Locked
The trigger is stuck and will not give under pressure.
Dirt and Debris
Clean around the trigger thoroughly to remove any dirt and debris that may be blocking the trigger. If the trigger is still jammed, there may be something internally preventing the trigger moving.
Trigger Position
Make sure the forward-reverse button is not in the center position. The center position serves as a safety and purposely locks out the drill. Push the forward-reverse button to the left if you want to drill forward, or push it to the right if you want to drill in reverse. Your direction will also be indicated by little arrows on either side of the forward-reverse button.
Drill Won’t Turn On
The drill will not respond when you press on the trigger.
Loose Battery
Try re-inserting the batteries. If this doesn’t help, your batteries may be dead and you may need to charge them.
Screw Won’t Catch Wood
The screw will not catch the wood properly and slips when drilling.
Forward/Reverse Control Button
Push the forward-reverse control button with your right finger, so it is sticking out of the left side of the drill. This will put the drill in forward mode so the drill is turning clockwise.
Drill Bits Falling Out of the Chuck
‘’Drill bits are not staying in the chuck. ‘’
Bits are not properly secured into the chuck
To ensure the bits are properly secured into the chuck, follow these steps:
1. Disconnect battery from the drill.
2. Grasp the black sleeve surrounding the chuck with one hand and secure the tool with the other hand. Rotate the chuck sleeve counterclockwise to open the chuck.
3. Insert the drill bit about ¾” into the opening on the chuck. Secure the bit by rotating the sleeve in the clockwise direction with one hand and holding the drill in the other.
4. To release the drill bit, repeat steps 1 and 2.

The torque adjustment is stuck between 1 and 15 on a little image of a drill and doesn’t move. What do I do to release it or fix it? Thanks.

I've owned countless Dewalt cordless tools including many drills. I have rarely seen a product line go down hill so rapidly. Bits slip and won't stay chucked, Chuck has no way on which to get a good grip, and overall construction simply and absolutely socks! I purchased instead a Milwaukee combo set and it's as if I left the stone age and landed on a couch watching high definition and eating ribs fresh off the amazon prime system. I would encourage everyone to join me and get your fill of a truly incredible Milwaukee drill and driver kit.

To keep the bit from falling out, make sure you have the drill in the right mode: right before the 1-15 torque settings there is a small drill bit symbol… select this and your bits will stay put. Worked for me.

Had this drill for about two months, used it a few times then one time as I tried to use the power died. I thought it was the battery so I replaced the battery with a fully charged one but same thing happened. Each time I squeezed the trigger it’ll work until the trigger is released then the power light shuts off and it died. It won’t start or light up no matter how you wiggle or turn the drill until you take off the battery and reattached it. I opened up the housing and see nothing wrong as all the wires seemed to be attaching to its components as they should. What is the problem? Need help

I have a DCD771, perfect battery that I use elsewhere, when I pull the trigger no matter the spin setting, the LED flashes on once for less than a second, and nothing else happens. The chuck doesn’t spin, there’s no whirring noise, the motor doesn’t activate. Nothing.

I have EXACTLY the same problem - did you find solution?

just ordered a new dewalt kit of 7 tools for $400 and got the drill out to use for the first time and it worked when i pressed the trigger but when i let off the trigger it would not start working again until the light would go off and that has a 20sec delay . So every time I let off the trigger I have to wait 20 sec for the light to go off before I can press the trigger for it to work. NOT A HAPPY CAMPER!!!! After spending $400 dollars on what I thought was the premier brand name of cordless tools I find out that they’re junk too.

When I try to use as an Ice auger it starts to get very hot and overheats. Smoke comes out and then it doesn’t work for a while.

From what I just viewed on u-tube it sounds like the transmission is shot which is a common cause. Can be self-repaired if inclined to but not sure of cost.

Bought the dcd791 Jan ‘19 as a kit with compact drill, bat., bag, charger from amazon & it’s Feb ‘22, 3yrs 1mon. makes 3yr warranty void! ‘HARDLY’ used it & out of nowhere gear stuck in 2nd & shifter in-op & won’t budge. Dewalt rep says ‘so sorry but not covered’ anymore & gives me a service center 700mi away! Uggghhh….so I’m SOL & stuck with a LEMON. Not sure if I’m staying with this product.

I have purchased 3 new DeWalt DCD796N XR Li-Ion Brushless drills and each of them have the same problem ... the bits fall out. I even purchased a new chuck from the Dewalt repair center, but after trying every method of replacement offered by Dewalt and U-tubers, I ended up throwing the entire drill in the garbage. Dewalt has a serious quality control problem. Time for a change I guess.
