My touchscreen is turning crazy after a Front Panel Replacement

Hi All,

I replace The Front Panel of my iPad 2, following the Ifixit Guide.

All is going fine, and I put the new one without any problem.

That's only the day after that I note an erratic behaviour of my new touchscreen. The iPad seems to be under control, and turns crazy (lauching app, writing text, etc.) like someone touch the screen randomly very quickly...

It does it some time to time, and after, it works almost fine, like nothing happens...

I don't know what to do...

I thought about a Touchscreen problem ? What do U think ?

For those of you with this problem you have a few things you can try to alleviate the issue:

Hard resetting iPad:

1) Ensure the iPad is ON

2) Hold the Power button and the Home button simultaneously until you see an apple logo appear. (ignore the slide to power off as it will reset while holding the buttons)

If that does not fix the issue, the next thing to do is to open up your iPad (I know it sucks) and to check all of your connections, especially the double connector leading to the digitizer on the bottom left corner of the iPad.

Ensure that it is fully seated within the connector clamps, and also ensure that when you reapply the glass that you are NOT pinching that cable, yes it is going to cover the cable, but if you have it folded or kinked it will give you those type of errors.

Also when purchasing new glass for iPads, keep in mind Apple does not make replacement parts and most if not all glass bought will be from a 3rd party. I recommend looking on eBay for a seller that has sold at least 100 of them just to ensure you get a quality piece.

Your last step is to purchase a new glass + digitizer.

Most of the time this problem is not the part, even if a cheap ebay part. The problem will be the cable placement that causes the crazy digitizer issue. The cable to the new glass needs to be tucked in the same fashion it was removed. If this cable overlaps itself, you will see this this issue. Make sure to tuck the cable properly and all should be just fine.

Thank you ! You saved me money and headaches that I've had for weeks! I opened my screen, realigned the cable and tucked it back in its place properly. Cost me a pack of permanent double sided tape.

Thank you so much mine was about to get recycled due to eratic behaviour After reading this article I reopened iPad cleaned it a second time, found two glass particles from previous broken screen doubled checked everything tight and secure and yes to my amazement and relief my iPad works as before one slight glitch though bottom left corner of iPad when typing struggles with the letter (a)

but not really an issue I can live with that I just rotate the screen when typing and problem solved

I have replaced hundreds of these, the more than likely causes are:

(1)Glass isn't sitting properly or LCD is fastened down all the way. Ensure that that LCD is screwed down all the way and that the front panel/digitzer is set down all the way - if it isn't you probably have corner or side damage or debris left behind like glass or glue, that is preventing it from sitting down where it needs to be. Fixing damaged corners or sides can be tricky, I use the G-Tool to reshape damaged areas. Also try not to destroy/remove the bezel that is mounted to the frame it is an aid for the glass to sit properly on top of the iPad. You can remove the bezel if needed to reshape, just make sure you put it back down and glue/sticky tape it back to the frame.

(2) Check your connection cable for any slight tears. Check the end of cable where it mounts to the board make sure it free off debris and not damaged. Also make sure that the board is clean where you are mounting the cable/ribbon into, use canned air if needed to blow out any debris. Make sure the cable it set in properly at the frame area - it should have an overlapped/lip bend like an (Z) from glass down to frame and then run down along the side of frame into case to board, it should be secured along the walls/frame. Check the guides here for detailed info. Remove digitizer connection, plug back in and hard reset with holding home and power button at the same time.

(3)Try another front panel, if that doesn't work then it be a board issue. You could try to restore it if you can get it too work, this can fix some but not all.

yes its a touch screen problem, replace it with another and you will be fine i think

I'm having the same issue. Replaced with a new, and it still is going wild. Will try a 3rd, I suppose.

In my situation, the iPad was crushed, not dropped. It's looking like the issue is the connection between the screen and the logic board, so I'm going to try to replace the logic board.

It's possible that the ribbon was pinched initially - I've definitely ensured that it's not now. Does the initial pinch ruin the thing?
