How Do I Make My Battery Work?

I dropped my phone down the stairs and the back came off. My phone still worked but I figured it needed a battery change- because we had already ordered a new battery since it had gotten wet a few times before. That battery did not end up fitting so I ordered a new one. My phone is an A1349 CDMA and I ordered a battery that said it was compatible with the A1349 but when I put it in and plugged it into my charger it didn't recognize the battery was there. The phone turned on but there was no service and no wifi- it was only turning on because the charger was plugged into it. I can tell because the phone does this with or without the battery as well as saying 100% and the battery should not be charged very much. The battery fits perfectly. The charger seems to work, considering the phone turns on. I can't go back to the old battery- it is past mutilation. I am wondering if the new battery is not working because the screw isn't in? Does it require the screw for it to work? Or is it because I accidentally broke something or messed something up inside?
