OK, so here is the problem - The lightening Port was corroded I cleaned it thoroughly it now charges but no data connection to computer or car. Tried new cable and no change tried another ipod (same style) and it worked fine. Could this be a software issue or the port needing to be replaced

Sorry it's a bit late, but I randomly came across this and noticed no replies. You've probably replaced the device or something by now, but just to answer your question, it was most likely the lightning port needing replacing if the same cable worked on another device. You could have tried to clean it some more but if it's corroded, that was probably the issue. :)
