Do I need to replace the yellow foam on the Video BGA?

I am reinstalling my logic board after a reballing repair. I sent the board in with the yellow foam pad attached to the shield side of the BGA. It was returned without it. How important is that pad? Is it an insulator or heat conductor? the only thing that would come into contact with it would be the lower shield.

Thanks,

Randy

Foam pads are normally just isolation devices, intended to either act as a cushion or to separate parts that could make contact with each other. I'd replace it with something similar but I'm not sure it's totally necessary.

Thanks Bob,

I had received an answer to this question on Apple Discussions from a member who said it was a thermal pad. That didn't seem right to me, but I replaced the yellow pad with a blue Apple thermal pad from another iBook an a couple of layers of thin thermal pads from Radio Shack.

From what you're saying, it sounds like I haven't done any damage. Maybe the iBook is even running cooler because of it. Who knows.

Thanks for your reply,

Randy
