DVD tray won't open; it thinks there's a dvd stuck inside

DVD player thinks there's a DVD stuck inside five-disc changer. It won't switch to any other disc but remains on disc one, and you cannot open the door. We managed to get the drawer open and it looks like the bottom part of the drawer is still inside the whole mechanism...this (I think) is what the player is interpreting to be a disc. An error code displays on the machine, and we've tried the hard reset, but nothing is freeing that piece of plastic that the disc actually sits on in the tray.
