I have recently replaced the on/off button on my Ipad but it is still not functional. Can't switch of or reboot the Ipad. Home button is working fine. Being quite a difficult job to replace, it may be possible that I damaged the new switch somehow. My question, suppose the switch was not damaged, what else could cause the symptoms I experience.

try to re assemble the power switch. and check the silver button if its pushing the on off or you can fell if the on off is clicking.. note every time you close or put back the touch screen make sure you check first if it is working.
