Digitizer port is damaged, photos included.

Block Image

My phone has weird issues. The number six will not type, I have replaced the digitizer twice and the issue remains. I bought a magnifier to take photos of the port and this is what I found.

Is this a hard fix? Can I buy one large part with it already attached? Do I need to learn to microsolder?

Thank you for your help!

Is this port attached to a larger part?

Can I buy just the logicboard with the ports attached?

I'm very skilled with learning to do intricate details. My hands are small, eyesight is perfect (how, at age 39, I have no idea!), and hyperfocus well. I spent $100 on this phone and am not looking to spend much more. I wouldn't mind buying the soldering equipment because I can justify it for other things. :)

If I can just buy another part with it already soldered, that would be great too. Thank you for your help.

Hi Leslie. Abdulmajeed is correct in saying that a connector replacement is hard, however I would not advise you to spend any money on connectors or kits or anything else. These connectors have a narrow pitch and are in a densely populated area of the logic board.

Unless you have a very fine point, temperature-controlled soldering iron, very thin solder (which is very expensive) and a lot of exprience, it is just not something feasible for a novice to do. You will likely melt through several connectors before you get anywhere close a decent solder joint and then you will have 33 more connections to make.

If you value this phone, then find a micro-soldering repair shop and have them do it for you.

On a separate note, the picture looks to me like there is debris inside the connector so perhaps it is not physically damaged but just dirty. Try to blow it out with compressed air or a soft brush.

Hi @ldd. Its always easier to follow the conversation if you comment on the specific answer from which you want additional info. Some of these questions end up having half a dozen answers and comments spread out all over the place.

By all means, if you want to learn a new (and fun) skill, invest in micro-soldering tools. But you won't save any money on this repair, that's for sure. A good soldering station, flux, solder, tweezers, braid ... alouette (as we say here), not to mention the FPC connector as well (you'll need to buy more than one because you will probably melt quite a few).

Even on a tight budget, you will spend hundreds (plural) of dollars before you even start.

As for buying the logic board that contains the connector, it currently sells for 170$ on iFixit ([связанный продукт отсутствует или отключен: IF124-028]).

Would I be able to buy a used logic board (attached to a phone) from ebay?

As for the soldering station, I'm considering taking the Apple tech course, so I'd get use out of it. I live in a neighborhood of Dallas that would really support me. Everyone has an iphone and it seems someone always needs some kind of repair, even if it is simple - like screen replacement!

The one linked from iFixit IS a used board. You might find some cheaper on aliexpress if you search around. Buying used phones locally is another option.

Awesome! That's exactly what I was wondering, as I have to consider the next step.

Hi Leslie,

Sorry for your iPhone _-.-!

- the digitiser connector need to be replaced

- the difficulty = Hard

- Yes you need skills in micro soldering

but you can do it if you buy the kit and watch the learning videos to make the fix properly .

thats how it goes for all of us, just choose the correct soldering tools if you don't have an idea i can help with motion links for the proper kit you need in this operation.

Thank you very much for the encouragement and thank you for believing that I can do it. I do not own any microsoldering tools today, but would be happy to buy them. In the past, I've changed out screens (I can do this in my sleep, it is so easy), changed batteries, replaced the a few other parts, and feel like this is something I'd like to learn to do rather than just pay someone to do it. If I wanted to hand the phone over, I would have done that a long time ago. I would appreciate links to help find the right tool. Thank you!

This looks more like the black sponge on the ftp connectors have gotten in?

Just give it a light rub with a toothbrush and see if that removes it?
