How can we speed up our computer?

The HP s5390a desktop computer takes a long time to boot, change users, open programs (apps), save and view the tree and rename folders and files.

We have ADSL wi-fi, and run Norton 360 as security.

4gb ram 3.87 usable

64 bit operating system x64-based processor

1tb hdd

3.2 ghz

Intel Core i5 CPU 650 @ 3.2GHz

We bought it with Windows 7, upgraded pro then V8, then 10 pro. It is 6-7 years old

Should I back up and reformat the drive. Then what should I do to restore files and programs without messing it up again.

Your PC specs are decent and you really shouldn't be having these problems.

Have a look at your task manager CTRL + Shift + ESC, pay attention to the tabs "Processes" and "Performance", try to identify what programs are using the most system resources and close them if you aren't using them.

A great app for reducing the load on your PC is CCleaner, it has a great suite of tools, specifically Tools > Startup, try to reduce the amount of start up programs to as little as possible.

ProTip: You can disable almost all of the programs in this list.

Running CCleaners "Cleaner" tool will remove a lot of junk files from your computer and free up space on your HDD, which can cause your computer to slow down.

Running the registry cleaner tool is good too, although will have minimal impact of performance.

Make sure you have an anti-virus and that it's up to date, some viruses have been known to use lots of system resources.

Lastly, if you still aren't getting satisfactory performance you can always reset your PC, handly I've created a guide for doing that.

Let me know if this helps.

@oldturkey03 @jayeff I just made a few edits to an answer and it was marked as spam :/

Hi @thethirdtwin ,

Did you add a link to a website into your answer?

Maybe it didn't like the the link (I don't know the criteria)

btw I am not a moderator so maybe @oldturkey03 can give you a better reason.

It was a link to a guide on this site, to be fair I made like 3 edits like a minute or two apart, gotta fix them typos you know :P

Hi @thethirdtwin ,

Typos are bad enough, it is the constant reminders (red underlining of words) of not spelling English the American way that gets to me, but "when in Rome ...." as the saying goes

из

@thethirdtwin that is definitely weird. I checked your answer and there is definitely no spam. iRobot sometimes goes a bit overboard. I did notice that even so it was deleted you did not get dinged with negative rep points. Lets see if the answer now stays or gets deleted again....

If your willing to reformat then why not duel drive it, put a second faster drive (SSD)in and put the OS on the SSD and use the old drive for storage, you don't have to disturb the original drive file structure . Use a keyfinder to gleen the OEM key from the system and then install your windows ten on the SSD and install the key . Once everything is up and running to your satisfaction delete the old windows system files from old hard drive for more storage space. Another thing you may want to look at is , when you upgraded from 7 to 8 and then to 10 did you do it with clean installs or by laying one OS over top the previous If you just installed one over the other there is probably a lot of left overs slowing you down .This should help with the cleanup

Hello,

IT PRO here...

While looking at your specifications here I noticed you are still rocking a HHD, this is one thing that can be upgraded.

Upgrading to the solid state drive brings a verity of benefits to your desktop!

I also see you have 4GB's of ram in your desktop. The standard of 4GB's of ram has long sense passed into the void of time of yester year. Your system ram can increase up to a total of 32GB's. System slowness is caused by a plethora of reasons, Fragmented HDD, Viruses, Partially failing hard drive, Operating system corruption just to name a few.

Your issue would most likely be overall improved with an upgraded storage system to the new Solid State drive, of course this would require you to install a new fresh copy of windows 10!

From that point it would be my advice to use your 1TB HDD as a secondary hard drive!

There are many ways to speed up an aging or under powered system, you can begin by:

+ scan your computer for any adware/viruses/malicious software that can slow your computer down

+ running msconfig (windows key+r then type msconfig) and disabling all unwanted or non essential startup programs.

+ shut down all non essential or unwanted program from the system tray or using task manager (ctrl+alt_del then select task manager).

+ Defragmenting your hard disk can speed access to files and programs up.

if you a still not happy with the performance boost given by the above you can backup you personal data, format and reinstall windows then restore your personal data.

But ultimately the best way of speeding up your system is investing in more memory, a faster hard disk and better processor.
