Compacq / HP is a bit vague as to whether there is a switch or button required to turn the WiFi on or off for your model. They say 'depends on model'
Check if there is a function key on your laptop with the symbol shown in the image below.
(click on image to enlarge for better viewing).
If there is try pressing it or if that is no good, try pressing it together with the Fn key on the keyboard.
If not there or still no good try the following:
Check in Device Manager (right click Windows Start button - left side of Taskbar and select link) on the status of the Wireless Network adapter. (scroll down and click on + sign to expand list under Network Adapters)
If red cross next to WiFi adapter, right click and select enable, if yellow exclamation mark right click and select update drivers.
Also check status information in the General tab of the WiFi adapter in Device Manager, (right click on WiFi entry, select Properties
If still no good check in BIOS (press F10 on startup - I think not sure with your laptop) and check that if there is a WiFi disable/enable setting that it is set to enabled.
