I recommend resetting the iPod by toggling the hold switch on and off and then holding the menu and center buttons down simultaneously. If you are still experiencing issues, you may need to perform a restore through iTunes.

I just put a 5th generation Ipod Video together from scratch which I have done several times. When I got it together it seemed to work fine when I turned it on and played a song, but I noticed it was slow to respond when scrolling up and down and kept freezing. I tried this (toggling the hold button on and off and holding menu and the center button to reset) and it worked like a charm no more slow response or freezing. Thank you very much!
