on the line side of the switch is what look like a resistor of some kind. The # on the item are in 5408 what is it . It’s black in color with a silver stripe.

Is this what it looks like?
If it is, it is a power diode, IN5408.
You can test if the one you have is OK by using an Ohmmeter. (test with the power totally disconnected from the device)
It should measure low resistance in one direction and high resistance when being measured in the other direction by reversing the Ohmmeter’s test probes.
