Model A1059 or A1099 / 20, 40, or 60 GB hard drive / touch sensitive click wheel

Display is completely dead

My Ipod photo will not power up. Nothing appears on the screen. I have tried to connect it with itunes, and the computer will recognize it as a device and it will appear to synch, but a error message will appear stating that could not synch. I have tried rebooting it manually (center button and menu depressed at same time), but nothing happens. The screen shows NOTHING. Thinking it was a dead battery, I took the unit appart and checked the battery. The battery is showing 4.1 volts on both leads. Any suggestions.

Tom, see if you can put your ipod in disk mode. Here is how you do it. Once in disk mode , see if you can access the hard drive and the files on it. It does sound you may have some hard drive errors. Also the display really should not stop you from syncing, but not sure what makes it not showing anything. The display are relatively inexpensive and easy to change. Give it a try and let us know.....good luck

Thanks for the response. I attempted to put the ipod in the disk mode, but it is hard to do that when the display is blank. I tried several times without any results. I have the ipod case open and cannot hear the hard drive making any sounds. Now neither itunes or the compter will recognize the ipod being hooked up. Does this narrow it down any?

Correction on that last comment. When I plug the ipod into the usb cable, I can hear the slight humming sound of the hard drive spinning. Still no display of any type.

I would think that if you can hear a steady hum and may be "feel" the HDD spin, it "might" be okay, but it is hard to say without seeing the display. I still think your best bet would be to get a conector that allows you to plug in your HDD as a USB drive. They are about $5 on ebay. Also a new display would be good. Those iPods are great to have a round and don't get to frustrated with it. They are easy and really inexpensive to fix and have a great audio quality. Let me know if you have trouble finding a display for it, I have a couple of used ones that I will let you have for no cost. BTW you do know that those are really great firwire device and that you can sync by using firewire, if you have a port on your computer. They also NEED the firewire AC adapter to finish restoring and charging

Thanks for the advice! Prior to doing a "restore" of the ipod on itunes, my computer seemed to recognize the ipod and attempted to "synch" the songs to it. After the "restore", the computer will not recognize the ipod. I have heard that you need to recharge it with the firewire ac adapter to finish the "restore" process. Is this correct? How does the firewire ac adapter work? Does it plug into the firewire port on top of the ipod and go directly into a ac adapter? I have seen firewire chargers on ebay, but they charge by plugging into the docking port of the ipod and have a firewire plug on the opposit end which goes into a ac adapter. Is this the right one, or is there one that goes directly into the firewire port on the ipod? I called the apple store and the said they do not sell the firewire ac adapters anymore.

One more question....Since I am getting no display at all, would you believe the problem to be the mother board, the hard drive, or the display itself? I was thinking that if the display was the only thing wrong, then the ipod should have synched to the computer, so I was thinking that wasn't the problem. If the hard drive was bad, and the mother board was good, would you still get any icons showing up on the screen when you tried to power it up or recharge it?

Thanks again for the help so far!

Tom
