Can I swap SSD between 2 MacBook Pros: 2013 into 2015?

Can I take the SSD from my old MacBook Pro and install it in my new one, OS and all and expect it to boot without issue or boot at all?

What has to be done to keep the data on the SSD safe?

Do I risk damaging the SSD or the computer?

They have slight differences in specs does this mean its not possible?

If it boot, will it be buggy or work completely normal?

I know the PCIe slots are backwards compatible, but will the software allow the old hardware to boot?

P.S.: Old computer trackpad is broken, but has 1 TB storage vs new computer only has 125 GB storage, don’t mind if I lose a little speed.

Slight spec differences:

  • Late 2013 /Early 2015
  • 2.8GHZ / 2.7GHZ
  • i7 core / i5 core
  • Both are model: A1502

Here’s the differences between your systems SSD’s

  • Your Late 2013 13” MacBook Pro has a PCIe 2.0 x2 interface
  • Your newer Early 2014 13” MacBook Pro has a PCIe 3.0 x4 interface

So while you can use your older SSD in your system so you have more space, you lose quite a lot of performance!

Frankly, I would leave the SSD alone in the system and instead get a this case: OWC Envoy Pro - Portable, Bus-Powered USB 3.0 Enclosure For Apple Flash SSDs (June 2013-Current Mac Models) to support your older drive.

My question is less, if it will fit in the slot, but rater, will the new computer boot the old computers drive, seeing as it probably has slight differences in specs.

If it boot, will it be buggy or work completely normal?

I did answer it!

"So while you can use your older SSD in your system so you have more space, you lose quite a lot of performance!"

Yes! It will work, but, its much slower! It has half of the I/O (2 lane vs 4 lane) and using a slower interface PCIe/AHCI (PCIe 2.0 x2) Vs PCIe/NVMe (PCIe 3.0). Given the need for speed I would recommend leaving the smaller faster SSD in your system.

Doesn't hurt to try, should boot up fine. Make sure to unplug battery when swapping SSDs out.
