Extremely Slow MacBook, only in SafeMode boot ok

Hi,

my Macbook Pro 2011 13” is extremely slow. Only if booted in safe mode its normal. System was installed completely new to High Sierra.

Trying to reinstall the system:

If i try internet recovery or boot from USB stick the grey progress bar gets stuck at the end and Macbook just shuts down.

Tested with new hard drive, no difference.

What else can I do?

Safe mode seems to be ok… What could be the problem? :P

Just waited ages to boot in normal mode into user account

Activity monitor shows 100% CPU Usage -

95% system

5% user

but all the processes are around 0-1% each

A bad battery may cause CPU throttling and if diagnostic warns the battery is bad, I wouldn’t be surprised that’s what the slowing down comes from. Try disconnecting battery from the logic board and see if that fixes the issue.

Battery is shown faulty in advanced hardware test, disconnected it, no change... But thanks =)

@gruhu13 Uhmmm, not the battery, nor the hard-disk..if the most probable answers don't help, try the least..disconnect all from the board, just leave the magsafe plugged and see if that changes picture. It can be even a smaller part, like a shorted loudspeaker, bad camera and so on. If you have at least a mouse that alone should suffice for basic testing.

This is obviously a software issue. Let’s see what is running in the background after you boot. Do a “Force Quit” by hitting the Command, Option and Escape button at the same time. This will bring up a list possible items that you need to get out of there.

To stop these on start up, go Under to Apple tp:

System Preferences > Users & Groups > Log in items

Now get rid of those items you don’t want.

BTW I always change out the hard drive/IR cable on this model to the 2012 cable and usually then add an SSD and up it to 8 GB of RAM.

@gruhu13 did you do what I suggested? If so, it time to run a "Paid For" anti-virus program.

hm my first answer wasnt saved.

So to be clear:

The lagginess starts before logging in. even in the log in screen mouse and keyboard are extremely laggy - and so is when logged in (both user and guest account) , extremely slow not usable, log in items is only spotify, but this is not started in guest account, still there is this lagginess

in safe mode this all doesnt happen. What happens ins safe mode: flickering on the screen during log in - then everything normal, just a bit slow but usable

furthermore:

extended hardware test says no failure except for battery

booting into recovery via bootable usb stick oder internet recovery is not possible - just shuts off at the end of a very long gray bar and apple logo screen

tried my harddrive cable from my MBP 2012 -> hard drive is not recognized in MBP11 (works fine in MBP12)

PS: thanks for your help!

Well. this is still a software issue. If you have done the two things I suggest first and it is still happening. It's time to wipe it and install a clean system. I suspect your are running Mojave and your 2011 machine won't boot from that.

Try installing the hard drive from your 2011 onto the 2012 and confirm.

New setup:

Freshly installed macOS High Sierra, on completely new hard drive

Potentially Faulty Battery disconnected from mainboard

advanced hardware test: battery faulty, no other errors

still:

booting in Safe mode: no lag

booting in normal mode: laggy as !&&*, not usable

so new software and disconnected battery didnt change it. What else could it be?

I have a similar problem. Only that when I plug in my MacBook and it works on power adapter and not on battery, it works very fine. But once I disconnect it, it works really slowly. If I boot into safe mode, it works fine too. Maybe you should try using your MacBook while plugged in to see?
