Dishwasher not draining - Hotpoint LST216A

Hi until today I had not used my dishwasher for nearly a year. It was working when I last used it. However today when I ran a wash, it fills up fine but after a while stops running and just shows specific lights flashing. The water does not drain and it remains at the bottom.

The power light and the 1st and 2nd light of the programme list keeps flashing. I have checked the filter and it is not clogged so I thought maybe the pipes might have had a build up of minerals/limescale after a year unused so I made a vinegar/baking soda solution and poured it into the machine but no luck. Despite the machine stopping and showing flashing lights, you can hear a humming sound. Any idea what this could be?

EDIT 23/12/2019

I have just ran a wash and actually stayed there to observe exactly what happens. I ran the rapid wash (~35mins). The machine starts up fine and water can be heard entering the machine and you can hear it “washing”. About 25 minutes (10mins to end) into the wash, the washing sound ends and it just starts humming. It continues humming until the end of the cycle where it ends with a beep and the aforementioned lights start flashing. The water remains in the base of the machine when I open the door.

Please check that model number as it is not coming up with a machine.

Hi,

Are all 3 lights flashing or just the Eco and Normal cycle lights with the Power light on steady?

Research online seems to indicate that for your model if the Eco light and the Normal light are flashing it is a heating problem

Can you stop the dishwasher after it has filled and started to wash (opening the door usually stops a dishwasher) to check if the water is hot or not.

If it is not hot then you may have to first check if the heater element is OK .

Update (12/23/2019)

Hi,

Apologies.

I was just going off the control panel for a LST216 from the user manual, but maybe the LST216A is different.

Does your control panel look like this and are the indicated lights the ones that are flashing?

Just curious. Are the dishes on the top rack getting wet? Can you check if the spray arms are turning?

Align them in position front to back or side to side and run the machine. Stop after it begins to wash and check if they have moved.

All 3 lights flash, the power light and lights 1 and 2 from the programme list. The lights don’t correspond to Eco and Normal but rather Intensive and Normal. Also when I open the door I can feel the heat and the steam that comes out so I think the water is getting heated up just fine

The image you posted with the arrows is correct. The spray arms were moved from the original starting position so they appear to be working. When I open the door, there is water at the base that has not been drained

Hi,

It may be as mentioned above, a faulty drain pump or something jamming it.

Here's a link to a video that shows how to replace the pump in a Hotpoint dishwasher.

Whilst it mightn't be for your particular model it still may be of some help.

Here's a link to just one supplier of the part.

I only linked this so that you could see what the drain pump looked like as compared to the wash pump.

If the pump is faulty there are other suppliers online that may suit you better.

Just search for "LST216A parts" to get results.

Thanks, the video is for a washing machine but it still gives you a good idea. I’ll have a go at checking out the drain pump and get back to you

Hi,

Not my day today, too many mistakes :-(

Again apologies.

I think the issue could be with the pump is stuck or tubing within the machine is clogged and is not letting the pump work. Since the machine was inactive for so long, lime and other minerals might have got the pump stuck. If you can get to it, try hitting it gently with a small hammer while it’s trying to drain. This might be the source of the humming and may loosen up the blades. I would also suggest pouring some industrial anti lime solution without cloths inside the machine.

To get to the pump, I’ll have to dismantle it?

In terms of pouring anti lime solution, do you mean to pour it at the base of the machine where the filter is?

из

You will have to dismantle it most likely, but it's not that difficult if you have some basic tools such as screw drivers and a wrench. The anti lime solution should be poured into the same slot where you would normally put the soap. In any case, I suggest reading the instructions first and make sure that the filter is clean before your run the machine. I hope this helps!

из

It is a dishwasher so the compartment for the soap is not that big..maybe you are confusing it for a washing machine?

из

I'm sorry! Yes, you are right, I confused it with a washing machine in my last post. Regardless, it's all the same jazz. You would have to dump the solution inside the dishwasher after making sure that the filer and everything is spic and span. You can also try removing the dishwasher from it's current position and check the output waste tube. Make sure that it isn't too high, otherwise the pump needs to work more and sometimes it just can't push it out. I've had this issue before.

из

You might have to remove the dishwasher from it's place and check the drain if it in fact does drain. Pour a generous amount of water into the drain pipe/tube to see if it disappears, if not, then you'll need to either pour in drain cleaner or purchase a tool that you shove inside while twisting it until it reaches the clog and removes it.
