IPhone X overheating with light usage. Camera module gets hot to touch and phone becomes laggy and slow. Face ID also not working. Should I get a battery replacement?

A battery replacement most likely won’t fix your issue. Whenever there’s excess heat, it’s a typical symptom of a short somewhere, especially if it gets hot to the touch. Was the device ever dropped in water?

Can’t recall :/ Should I bring it to a repair shop? If so, what do I tell the technician?
@timothygsm I would mention that it's over heating and ask them to take a look. Some shops such as myself do charge a diagnostic fee. I would look for one that specializes in microsoldering and/or data recovery. They're usually the ones that are able to diagnose components at the board level.
