My GE Cafe dishwasher is leaving a brown/dark stain on everything

My GE Cafe dishwasher (CDT725SSF7SS) has worked wonderfully for 4 1/2 years, but about four months ago started leaving a terrible brown or dark stain on stainless, plastics and ceramics (basically everything). We have not changed detergent (Cascade), items being washed, settings (normal wash, heated dry, use jet dry), city water is the same, so we are at a loss as to what is causing it.

I had service check to be sure it is running properly, and they said the machine is operating properly, including water temp being hot enough. I’ve used citrus crystals three times - zero impact. I’ve tried different detergents - Finish and Kirkland, yet no difference. I called the neighbors to see if they’ve had any new issues, thinking it might be the city water, and nothing. I even called the City, and they haven’t changed the water chemistry, pipes or anything in my area, so it can’t be the water.

Help please - we’re stumped!

Thanks,

Chris

I wonder if something is draining out... try filling it a few times manually with hot soapy water, and then just turning on the drain function. Do like 2-3 times. Dont run it in between. Just fill it, close the door, and drain. After that try using vinegar in it to help break up anything that might be left. Just let it run a cycle. Worked for mine might help for yours.

@brandon_k thanks - tried what you suggested. It's draining properly, so no change in performance. I added a pic of the discoloration occurring to our plastic cutting board - never happened before, so this is irritating beyond belief.

@cprover you might have to get in and open the bottom up. Looks like something is pooling in there. They never drain 100% (because that will make the pump run dry.. not good) so maybe something is collecting in the bottom? Open the bottom and see if it needs cleaned. Thats the only thing I can think of if it isn't an incoming water problem. While its off and cool try cleaning the heating element. Maybe its deteriorating and compromising water quality?

@brandon_k I'm stumped - still staining everything. Having water tested just to be 100% certain it's not that, but neighbors not having the issue, nor are we having issue with our clothes washer, which I'd think would be affected too if it were a water issue. Am going to have a tech come use a camera inside to 100% verify it's cycling properly, and reaching temps... and will have them verify everything is clean/not able to cause tarnishing/staining issue. Surreal. If it weren't $1,100, I'd replace the entire diswasher!

Did you ever find out what was wrong? Mine just started doing this too!

This happened to us as well, and continues to happen. I noticed it first on my china or anything light in color. I then noticed it on cutting boards and can even see a mottled look on darker items. The only way I can clear the dishes is by dipping them in a solution of bleach water. This lasts a few months, then the stains reappear. I have done all of the recommended diagnostics as well, including checking with our water provider. Very frustrating.

We continue to have this issue. New hot water heater and pressure tank, which helped for a short while, but now it's as bad as ever. Water tests show no contamination... only a higher amount of air in the water. We're at a loss, as plumber and water quality experts have no answers as of yet, and the dishwasher repair people point back to the water or heater. Surreal...

Hi @cprover ,

Did you check that the filters are OK as you didn’t mention it?

Here’s an image that may help.

If the filters are faulty here’s a link to the parts. The filters are part #451 & 502 in the Sump and filter assembly diagram.

The supplier linked was only to show the location of the parts and cost. There are other suppliers online that may suit you better. Just search for CDT725SSF7SS parts to get results
